The new edition of this highly regarded textbook provides a detailed overview of the most important characterization techniques for solar cells and a discussion of their advantages and disadvantages. It describes in detail all aspects of solar cell function, the physics behind every single step, as well as all the issues to be considered when improving solar cells and their efficiency. The text is now complete with examples of how the appropriate characterization techniques enable the distinction between several potential limitation factors, describing how quantities that have been introduced theoretically in earlier chapters become experimentally accessible. With exercises after each chapter to reinforce the newly acquired knowledge and requiring no more than standard physics knowledge, this book enables students and professionals to understand the factors driving conversion efficiency and to apply this to their own solar cell development.

Moons of the Solar System

This book captures the complex world of planetary moons, which are more diverse than Earth´s sole satellite might lead you to believe. New missions continue to find more of these planetary satellites, making an up to date guide more necessary than ever. Why do Mercury and Venus have no moons at all? Earth´s Moon, of course, is covered in the book with highly detailed maps. Then we move outward to the moons of Mars, then on to many of the more notable asteroid moons, and finally to a list of less-notable ones. All the major moons of the gas giant planets are covered in great detail, while the lesser-known satellites of these worlds are also touched on. Readers will learn of the remarkable trans-Neptunian Objects - Pluto, Eris, Sedna, Quaoar -including many of those that have been given scant attention in the literature. More than just objects to read about, the planets´ satellites provide us with important information about the history of the solar system. Projects to help us learn more about the moons are included throughout the book. Most amateur astronomers can name some of the more prominent moons in the solar system, but few are intimately familiar with the full variety that exists in our backyard: 146 and counting. As our understanding of the many bodies in our solar system broadens, this is an invaluable tour of our expanding knowledge of the moons both near and far.

This book is written for those contemplating getting a solar panel system if they don´t know enough about it yet. A good, basic understanding of what you need to know ´´before´´ diving into it is what you will learn in order to make an informed decision; especially if you are in the United States (or Canada). So, if you are considering do-it-yourself solar panels for your home, or solar panel installation through a contractor, Solar Power for Sustainable Living - What to Consider Before Going the Do-It-Yourself Solar Route is a great reference guide to make sure you´ve considered the most important avenues or prerequisites of getting into do-it-yourself solar panels before you get started and then realize that you should´ve considered these aspects first, which are very important in decision making. It is informative and detailed to give you a good understanding of how it all works and what´s really involved when it comes to obtaining a PV solar power system for sustainable living. You´ll get information, terminology, advice, things you´d better be aware of or consider beforehand, education, valuable tips that will literally help you, what exact items you´ll need to buy and what it will cost, how to connect with other people doing the same thing that you are (which is huge), and much more. You´ll get surprise information that most people haven´t thought about before or are simply not aware of. Solar Power for Sustainable Living - What to Consider Before Going the Do-It-Yourself Solar Route provides the kind of due diligence you need for sustainable living through a solar power system. 1. Do you want to install solar panels on your home, vehicle, or gates? Maybe you need solar panels for a fan in your attic. You already know that solar panels are the best thing to have in your home. You did your research and found out that installing wind turbines is expensive, and most HOAs will not allow you to have them on your property. If you live in a rural area, you still found out that the technology for the wind versus solar power is not as inexpensive. So how do you go about installing solar power? Is it something you can do, or do you need a qualified professional? What does the installation entail? All questions above are great to ask. You should have the answers before you unilaterally decide to install solar on your home. There are plenty of things that could prevent you from installing solar panels simply because of the information you need to know. Discover the cautions that may have you thinking again about installing solar panels on your own. For example, if you have never worked with electricity or are not certified, you may negate your home warranty or homeowner´s insurance by installing it yourself. You can install the solar panels on your roof, in a vehicle, or for a gate to open without being an electrician if you intend on having one run the wiring. There is nothing to the actual installation of the panels alone; it is the wiring and circuitry that you should have a professional for - if you are not one. In this guide you´ll learn: What you can use solar for The types of systems you can choose The components you need to purchase The installation of the panels A quick guide on electrical installation Detailed steps on how to install solar panels And much, much more! 1. Studies on Earth Abundant Tin Sulfide (SnS) Fil...

The two main thin film forerunners alongside a-Si are CdTe, and CIGSe. At present, the power production capacity reaches GW range using these absorber materials in thin film solar cell technology. However, the toxicity of ´Cd´, and Se ´; and limited resources of ´In´, and ´Ga´ presents a major barrier towards meeting the multi-terawatt-scale target through current thin film photovoltaics. To address the issues, the quaternary semiconductor, CZTS has been considered as an alternative to currently existing CIGSe and CdTe technologies due to its suitable opto-electronic properties and devoid of toxicity and expensiveness. However, challenge of high efficiency is still remained due to intrinsic problems associated with CZTS like its complex chemistry, narrow pure phase region, and unfavorable defect physics. Hence, it was worthwhile to explore the potential and simple binary earth-abundant absorbers for solar cells. SnS is one such potential materials. The present book explores - the detailed introduction of solar cells, work done on SnS so far, the preparation procedures include both physical and chemical routes and finally the fabrication and characterization of SnS based cells.

The renewable sources such as solar, wind, biomass, etc. are often used for electricity generation for their availability, no green-house gas emission and solar photovoltaic is major among them. Many On-Grid PV systems are being installed around the globe nowadays to reduce electricity dependency on a single source and thus enhance availability of energy sources. Kathmandu, Nepal receives sufficient sunshine with insolation around 4.5 to 5 kWh/m 2 /day, which justifies essence of grid-connected solar PV installations. A 115.2 kWp solar plant has been installed at Tribhuvan University Teaching Hospital (TUTH), Maharajgunj, Kathmandu to fulfill its own load demands and reduce the electricity bill of the building. The detailed On-Grid solar PV system is modeled, and performance parameters such as Performance Ratio, Specific Yield and Capacity Utilization Factor as defined by IEC are estimated using simulation techniques from PVSYST. The actual parameters are calculated, and a comparison is made with simulated parameters. Thus, necessary measures for optimized generation have been suggested to the concerned authorities.
