Interested in how an efficient search engine works? Want to know what algorithms are used to rank resulting documents in response to user requests? The authors answer these and other key information retrieval design and implementation questions. This book is not yet another high level text. Instead, algorithms are thoroughly described, making this book ideally suited for both computer science students and practitioners who work on search-related applications. As stated in the foreword, this book provides a current, broad, and detailed overview of the field and is the only one that does so. Examples are used throughout to illustrate the algorithms. The authors explain how a query is ranked against a document collection using either a single or a combination of retrieval strategies, and how an assortment of utilities are integrated into the query processing scheme to improve these rankings. Methods for building and compressing text indexes, querying and retrieving documents in multiple languages, and using parallel or distributed processing to expedite the search are likewise described. This edition is a major expansion of the one published in 1998. Besides updating the entire book with current techniques, it includes new sections on language models, cross-language information retrieval, peer-to-peer processing, XML search, mediators, and duplicate document detection.

Understanding Collective Intelligence

A group of individuals working together, in a collaborative or coordinated manner, can show remarkable group (collective) intelligence. The group intelligence is not merely an aggregation of intelligence of all individuals in the group, but is often much more. There can be a synergistic combination of individual abilities to produce higher capability at the group level. With the technological advancements in information and communication technologies, computers and other electronic devices have become mediators between the individuals in a group, who need not to be geographically at the same place. New kinds of technology mediated groups and the concept of computer supported collaborative work are being explored. One of the key research question now is "how can people and computers be connected so that collectively they act more intelligently than any individual, group, or computer has ever done before?". This book attempts to present our work on the collective intelligence concept along a detailed examination of some of the important issues in it.

Resolving Conflict by Mediation
44,90 € *

Since there are few quick-reference resources for resolving conflict, dispute managers may be very experienced in the subject matter of the dispute, but lack the experience of being a neutral dispute-resolver in charge of a mediation. This book is a primer of the mediation process for new or untrained mediators. Mediation is a highly-successful process for resolving disputes voluntarily. If done properly, it has an 80% success rate. The first half of the book discusses the wide range of conflicts that are frequently the subject of mediation. The range of issues include common conflicts that happen in life, such as family, work, church, and business. The causes of such conflicts are examined, the study of which is necessary to successfully mediating such situations. The second half gives a detailed and organized process of the common phases and steps of a typical mediation. The book concludes with an outline of some helpful resources, including books, websites, and legislation which provide some guidance for certain mediation situations.

Penal Theories and Institutions

"What characterizes the act of justice is not resort to a court and to judges, it is not the intervention of magistrates (even if they had to be simple mediators or arbitrators).  What characterizes the juridical act, the process or the procedure in the broad sense, is the regulated development of a dispute.  And the intervention of judges, their opinion or decision, is only ever an episode in this development.  What defines the juridical order is the way in which one confronts one another, the way in which one struggles. The rule and the struggle, the rule in the struggle, this is the juridical."- Michel FoucaultPenal Theories and Institutions is the title Michel Foucault gave to the lectures he delivered at the Collège de France from November 1971 to March 1972.In these lectures Michel Foucault presents for the first time his approach to the question of power that will be the focus of his research up to the writing of Discipline and Punish (1975) and beyond.  His analysis starts with a detailed account of Richelieu's repression of the Nu-pieds revolt (1639-1640) and then goes on to show how the apparatus of power developed by the monarchy on this occasion breaks with the system of juridical and judicial institutions of the Middle Ages and opens out onto a "judicial State apparatus", a "repressive system", whose function is focused on the confinement of those who challenge its order.Michel Foucault systemizes the approach of a history of truth on the basis of the study of "juridico-political matrices" that he had begun in the previous year's lectures (Lectures on the Will to Know) and which is at the heart of the notion of "knowledge-power".In these lectures Foucault develops his theory of justice and penal law.The appearance of this volume marks the end of the publication of the series Foucault's courses at the Collège de France (the first volume of which was published in 1997).

Nanoparticle Induced Inflammatory Signaling in ...

The cardiorespiratory system is designed to facilitate the exchange of gases, such as oxygen and carbon dioxide, maintain acid-base and electrolyte balance, and serve as an important mechanism for filtering potentially harmful environmental materials. Respiratory exposure to nanoparticles, in an environmental or industrial setting, can induce the expression of inflammatory mediators in various cell types of the lung. The research detailed in this book provides a possible mechanism by which particle-induced signaling in alveolar Type II epithelial cells may occur and suggests that the epithelial cell signaling mechanism initiates and propagates a pro-inflammatory pathway that can lead to pulmonary fibrosis. Pulmonary inflammation, resulting from particulate exposure, is an interesting model in which to study inflammation, dysregulated tissue repair and carcinogenesis. With the advent of nanoparticle technology, in industrial and consumer products, toxicological assessment of Aerosil200 particles may become a standard against which to measure the effects of other nanoparticles.

Acute Phase Mediators and the IGF System

Catabolic changes in cancer disease-, aging process- , critically ill patients, as well during chronic infection and inflammation are associated with weight loss, negative nitrogen balance and severe muscle wasting that can not be explained solely by reduced caloric intake. These conditions are associated with alterations in the acute phase mediator cytokines and insuline-like growth factor (IGF) system. This book provides an excellent review of acute phase mediators and IGF system components and a detailed description of an in vitro and in vivo experimental model system in a well-structured and uniquely didacted way. This is the first and only publication as such in the topic and fills an important gap. The present work should give to researchers a clear and concise general view of the subject, and a bunch of ideas for new projects, to specialists in medicine, veterinary medicine and biology sufficient information to understand the "secret" of cytokine- and IGF systems and its importance in anabolic- and catabolic mechanisms and to students a useful model and a fast and "painless" information how to give answers to scientific questions, and to create their thesis.

Resource allocation in market-oriented Clouds
59,00 € *

In mid-1990s, the vast deployment of high-speed public data networks has motivated the externalization of private computing resources. Cloud is the most recent evolution of distributed computing. In terms of resource virtualization, managing conjunctly distributed computing, storage, and network facilities remains a complex optimization problem. This problem is closely related to the design of innovative pricing strategies for Cloud Service Providers (CSPs) that act as mediators between resource owners and end-users. In practice, resource owners do not accept, for confidentiality reasons, to inform the CSP about a detailed description of their available equipment. Meanwhile, they accept to regularly provide the CSP with an abstracted view of their sharable resources. In this book, we propose market-based resource allocation algorithms. We consider two business models depending on the fact the CSP owns or not the required resources. An extension to our algorithm is to make use of multicast nodes in order to manage point-to- multipoint data transfer. Another feature is to distribute storage data over multiple storage nodes.
