Why can fear be pleasurable? Why do we sometimes enjoy an emotion we otherwise desperately wish to avoid? And why are the movies the predominant place for this paradoxical experience? These are the central questions of Julian Hanich´s path-breaking book, in which he takes a detailed look at the various aesthetic strategies of fear as well as the viewer´s frightened experience. By drawing on prototypical scenes from horror films and thrillers like Rosemary´s Baby, The Silence of the Lambs, Seven and The Blair Witch Project, Hanich identifies five types of fear at the movies and thus provides a much more nuanced classification than previously at hand in film studies. His descriptions of how the five types of fear differ according to their bodily, temporal and social experience inside the auditorium entail a forceful plea for relying more strongly on phenomenology in the study of cinematic emotions. In so doing, this book opens up new ways of dealing with these emotions. Hanich´s study does not stop at the level of fear in the movie theater, however, but puts the strong cinematic emotion against the backdrop of some of the most crucial developments of our modern world: disembodiment, acceleration and the loosening of social bonds. Hanich argues that the strong affective, temporal, and social experiences of frightening movies can be particularly pleasurable precisely because they help to counterbalance these ambivalent changes of modernity.

As a young soldier in the battlefields of Gallipolia, Sydney Loch witnessed the horror of war first-hand. On his return to Australia he detailed what he saw in his book The Straits Impregnable. Hoping to avoid military censorship his publishers dubbed Sydney´s book a novel. But as the war ground on and the numbers of casualties grew the publisher inserted a note saying the story was factual. The book, which had enjoyed huge literary acclaim, was immediately withdrawn from sale by the censors. Sydney Loch´s experiences in the war shaped his life afterwards. With his wife, Joice, he went on to work in refugee camps in Poland and Palestine and his many subsequent book set in war-torn countries reflected his humanitarian beliefs. In To Hell and Back historians Susanna and Jake de Vries have recovered and edited Sydney´s book for a new generation of readers and listeners and have written a biography of his remarkable life. 1. This program is read by the author Elizabeth Smart follows up her number one New York Times best seller, My Story - about being held in captivity as a teenager and how she managed to survive - with a powerful and inspiring audiobook about what it takes to overcome trauma, find the strength to move on, and reclaim one’s life. Author. Activist. Victim - no more. In her fearless memoir, My Story - the basis of the Lifetime Original movie I Am Elizabeth Smart - Elizabeth detailed, for the first time, the horror behind the headlines of her abduction by religious fanatic Brian David Mitchell and his wife, Wanda Barzee. Since then, she’s married, become a mother, and traveled the world as the president of the Elizabeth Smart Foundation, sharing her story with the intent of helping others along the way. Over and over, Elizabeth is asked the same question: How do you find the hope to go on? In this audiobook, Elizabeth returns to the horrific experiences she endured, and the hard-won lessons she learned, to provide answers. She also calls upon others who have dealt with adversity - victims of violence, disease, war, and loss - to explore the pathways toward hope. Through conversations with such well-known voices as Anne Romney, Diane Von Furstenburg, and Mandy Patinkin to spiritual leaders Archbishop John C. Wester and Elder Richard Hinckley to her own parents, Elizabeth uncovers an even greater sense of solace and understanding. Where There’s Hope is the result of Elizabeth’s mission: It is both an up-close-and-personal glimpse into her healing process and a heartfelt how-to guide for listeners to make peace with the past and embrace the future. From the audiobook: ´´I was not willing to accept that my fate was to live unhappily ever after. Everything - my family, my home, my chance to go to school - had been given back to me, and I didn’t want t 1. Language: English. Narrator: Elizabeth Smart. Mapped out on a playing field of ticklish male flesh, My Name Is Rand follows a young man on his search for the ultimate erotic adventure. Betrayed by his own skin into a helplessly eroticized state, he becomes a captive of a bizarre torture camp where men practice extreme tickling. After several near-death experiences, he stumbles across a hiding place where several desperate men plot an escape while taking physical solace in each other. Sweatily detailed in its depiction of men driven over the edge, this nightmarish novel is a bondage epic, a horror comic, and a totally original speculation on the nature of time and consciousness. 1. On September 17, 1862, the US was on the brink, facing a permanent split into two separate nations. America´s very future hung on the outcome of a single battle - and the result reverberates to this day. Given the deep divisions that still rive the nation, and given what unites the country, too, Antietam is more relevant now than ever. The epic battle, fought near Sharpsburg, Maryland, was a Civil War turning point. The South had just launched its first invasion of the North; victory for Robert E. Lee would almost certainly have ended the war on Confederate terms. If the Union prevailed, Lincoln stood ready to issue the Emancipation Proclamation. He knew that freeing the slaves would lend renewed energy and lofty purpose to the North´s war effort. Lincoln needed a victory to save the divided country, but victory would come at a price. Detailed here is the cannon-din and desperation, the horrors and heroes of this monumental battle, one that killed 3,650 soldiers, still the highest single-day toll in American history.Martin, an acclaimed writer of narrative nonfiction, renders this landmark event in a revealing new way. More than in previous accounts, Lincoln is laced deeply into the story. Antietam represents Lincoln at his finest, as the grief-racked president - struggling with the recent death of his son Willie - summoned the guile necessary to manage his reluctant general, George McClellan. The Emancipation Proclamation would be the greatest gambit of the nation´s most inspired leader. And, in fact, the battle´s impact extended far beyond the field; brilliant and lasting innovations in medicine, photography, and communications were given crucial real-world tests. No mere gunfight, Antietam rippled through politics and society, transforming history.A Fierce Glory is a fresh and vibrant account of an event that had enduring consequences that still resonate today. 1.
