The seminal volume on body painting and adornment by the world´s preeminent photographers of African culture. Following the international masterpiece Africa Adorned, Carol Beckwith and Angela Fisher have focused on the traditions of body painting spanning the vastly unique cultures of the African continent. In a contemporary world so fascinated with tattoos and piercings, Beckwith and Fisher document the origins of these fashionable adornments as passed down through African tribal culture. Featured are portraits of the richly colored, detailed, and exquisite body paintings of the Surma, Karo, Maasai, Himba, and Hamar peoples, among others. Drawing from expeditions in the field and firsthand experiences with African peoples and cultures over the past thirty years and with more than 250 spectacular photographs, this is the definitive work on the expressiveness and imagination of African cultural painting of the human body.
This is the Second World War story of a champion cyclist turned airman who lived to tell the tale against almost impossible odds. A New Zealander in the RAF, Ian Walker served as a member of Bomber Command during the Battle of Britain and survived three plane crashes in his Wellington bomber. The last of these saw him crash land in enemy territory, where he was eventually captured and taken prisoner. Confined within the claustrophobic walls of a POW camp, he hatched a plot with a fellow inmate to escape. This they achieved, almost miraculously, in broad daylight. Living on basic rations, they navigated the enemy wilds until they were captured, yet again, and taken back to prison. After languishing in POW camps and hospitals for more than two years, Ian had the good fortune of being placed on a list of injured men to be exchanged, man for man, with German prisoners. The little-known story of the history-making exchange that took place in Barcelona in October 1943 is detailed here, describing how thousandsof allied and axis prisoners were safely returned to their homelands in the midst of war. Ian´s daughter, Angela Walker, has endeavoured to preserve the details of her father´s extraordinary odyssey in full. Her tale circumnavigates the globe, weaving snippets taken from letters and extensive journals kept by her father in order to create a compelling, warm hearted and thrilling account of his war. Having once inspired her to win a gold medal at the Commonwealth Games, her father now continues to inform and inspire her through the stories she´s recovered from his past. Her book commemorates the efforts of all New Zealand´s wartime airmen who, like her father, made significant contributions in the fight for allied victory.
Tayap is a small, previously undocumented Papuan language, spoken in a single village called Gapun, in the lower Sepik River region of Papua New Guinea. The language is an isolate, unrelated to any other in the area. Furthermore, Tayap is dying. Fewer than fifty speakers actively command it today. Based on linguistic anthropological work conducted over the course of thirty years, this book describes the grammar of the language, detailing its phonology, morphology and syntax. It devotes particular attention to verbs, which are the most elaborated area of the grammar, and which are complex, fusional and massively suppletive. The book also provides a full Tayap-English-Tok Pisin dictionary. A particularly innovative contribution is the detailed discussions of how Tayap´´s grammar is dissolving in the language of young speakers. The book exemplifies how the complex structures in fluent speakers´ Tayap are reduced or reanalyzed by younger speakers. This grammar and dictionary should therefore be a valuable resource for anyone interested in the mechanics of how languages disappear. The fact that it is the sole documentation of this unique Papuan language should also make it of interest to areal specialists and language typologists.

Arriving in the ancient Byzantine city in the year 1273, Anna Zarides has only one mission: to prove the innocence of her twin brother, Justinian, who has been exiled to the desert for conspiring to kill Bessarion, a nobleman. Disguising herself as a eunuch named Anastasius, Anna moves freely about in society, using her skills as a physician to maneuver close to the key players involved in her brother’s fate. With her medical practice thriving, Anna crosses paths with Zoe Chrysaphes, a devious noblewoman with her own hidden agenda, and Giuliano Dandolo, a ship’s captain conflicted not only by his mixed Venetian-Byzantine heritage but by his growing feelings for Anastasius.Trying to clear her brother’s name, Anna learns more about Justinian’s life and reputation, including his peculiar ties to Bessarion’s beautiful widow and his possible role in a plot to overthrow the emperor. This leaves Anna with more questions than answers, and time is running out. For an even greater threat lies on the horizon: Another Crusade to capture the Holy Land is brewing, and leaders in Rome and Venice have set their sights on Constantinople for what is sure to be a brutal invasion.Anna’s discoveries draw her inextricably closer to the dangers of the emperor’s treacherous court - where it seems that no one is exactly who he or she appears to be.Richly detailed and finely wrought, The Sheen on the Silk is a bold and brilliant work that affirms Anne Perry’s talent as a master storyteller. 1. At the age of 32, divorced and alone, I suddenly found myself in a deep depression. Never having experienced this before, I didn´t know how to cope. Seeing my car keys, I was going to drive off a cliff. The next morning I awoke and was scared by what I had felt. At that point I begged God for something to change. Suddenly I heard, ever so quietly, a whisper without sound, but with words that formed clear, transcendent impressions expressing an impulse urging me to write. I was familiar with the term channeling and what it meant. I knew I was experiencing it because what followed was beyond anything I had ever experienced before. One day very soon after, I began receiving what I knew to be channeled information through an energy source outside of myself. I asked if this energy had a name. Adonys came to me. For two years I wrote many books and developed a deep relationship with this writing. I changed from an angry, frustrated, lost person to being more focused and calm, with a purpose to learn and study everything sent to me. It changed my life. I was ready to find the man of my dreams. I asked Adonys for help. Suddenly a different energy entered, another channeled loving spirit calling himself by the name of Jim. He actually lived in Carmel, California, at this time. Over many months he wrote me detailed love letters. He was the man of my dreams. I was so infatuated. Then I decided to try to find Jim. With a map, directions, and symbols he sent to me, I actually flew with my girlfriend to Carmel, California. This true story gets even crazier. Did I find my soul mate? You have to hear this true story to find out! 1. Language: English. Narrator: Angela Davis. Audio sample: http://samples.audible.de/bk/acx0/038429/bk_acx0_038429_sample.mp3. Digital audiobook in aax.
