First published in 2006, this book has become the standard reference on nano-optics. Now in its second edition, the text has been thoroughly updated to take into account new developments and research directions. While the overall structure and pedagogical style of the book remain unchanged, all existing chapters have been expanded and a new chapter has been added. Adopting a broad perspective, the authors provide a detailed overview of the theoretical and experimental concepts that are needed to understand and work in nano-optics, across subfields ranging from quantum optics to biophysics. New topics of discussion include: optical antennas; new imaging techniques; Fano interference and strong coupling; reciprocity; metamaterials; and cavity optomechanics. With numerous end-of-chapter problem sets and illustrative material to expand on ideas discussed in the main text, this is an ideal textbook for graduate students entering the field. It is also a valuable reference for researchers and course teachers.
Ten years ago, the first edition of Graves´ Orbitopathy: A Multidisciplinary Approach was published. Since then, the book has become very popular and much has happened in the field to warrant a third edition. What has not changed is the successful and attractive question-and-answer format of the book. In the 3rd, revised and expanded edition, new chapters have been added on co-morbidity, local treatment modalities, novel immunosuppressive therapy, detailed protocols, and questions frequently asked by patients. All chapters of the previous edition have been thoroughly updated. Subjects covered then include the pathology of Graves´ Orbitopathy (GO) and the controversial views on its pathogenesis; assessment of changes using reliable measuring techniques; medical management of GO including established and alternative treatment options; technical explanations and illustrations of various surgical procedures; and finally, the molecular, immunologic, and clinical aspects of this complex disorder. Additionally, ample consideration is given to the new 2016 ETA/EUGOGO guidelines on the management of GO.
Excerpt from Medical Microscopy: A Guide to the Use of the Microscope in Medical Practice Within recent years the microscope has gradually been brought more and more into use as an aid to diagnosis. In certain classes of diseases, notably those of the chest and urinary organs, it has become almost a routine practice, in hospitals at any rate, to examine the sputa and deposits, and the use of the microscope is rapidly being extended to private practice. In this work an effort has been made to lay before practitioners and students the most simple methods of preparing microscopic sections, and of the examination of urinary deposits, sputa, blood, &c. At the same time, for those Who Wish to extend their studies further, more elaborate methods have been detailed, and chap ters added on the examination of food and bacteriological methods. It would have been beyond the scope of the book to have given descriptions of all the pathological changes found in the different organs, but a chapter on Tumours has been inserted, as for purposes of diagnosis, such examinations are frequently made in the operating theatre or post-mortem room. Many of the illustrations are original, but I have also to thank Profs. Ziegler, von Jaksch and Crookshank. It is 1882 and the Old Ones are already here. They arrived seven hundred years ago and have been ruling the planet ever since. The majority of people just get on with their lives, accepting their monstrous rulers. However, there is a growing band of revolutionaries who wish to free mankind from their slavery. These freedom fighters call themselves the Restorationists. A secret war has already broken out between the Restorationists and the forces loyal to the Old Ones. The invention of dynamite has changed the balance of power and a lone assassin now has the capacity to destroy an Old One. In this shadow world of assassins, informers, police agents and anarchists nobody is quite sure who is who and which side they fight for.The game A Study In Emerald draws its central plot from the award winning short story penned by Neil Gaiman, in which the worlds of Sherlock Holmes and H.P. Lovecraft are combined to telling effect. However, to create a world detailed enough for players, much has been added from real history. The nineteenth century was a time of unrest, with many colourful characters fighting both for and against the authorities.A Study In Emerald is the outcome of the merging of these three worlds.
